Ethnic group

Mnemonic (reference code): ETHGRPS, ETHGRPEW, ETHGRPNI, ETHNIC1

Definition: This question records each person's perceived ethnic group and cultural background. Although the questions differ between the different parts of the UK, the same detailed codes are used across the UK to code the write-in responses. In standard output the most detailed classification used is 16 groups (England and Wales), 14 groups (Scotland) and 12 groups (Northern Ireland). The full list of categories will be available for commissioned output.

Establishment type

Definition:​ This variable describes the nature of the establishment.

It is based on the responses to the questions below. In addition there is a box for enumerator use only which is ticked for persons sleeping rough.

Electoral Ward 2007

In Scotland, each Council area contains a number of electoral wards. The voters in each of these electoral wards elect councillors to the local council. Prior to 2007 each electoral ward elected a single councillor (a single-member ward) to the local council. In 2007, with the introduction of proportional representation, the number of wards was reduced and each electoral ward now elects either 3 or 4 councillors (multi-member wards).

• single grandparent with grandchild(ren) but no children present from the intervening generation.

Type: Derived variable

Definition:

A Family Reference Person (FRP) identifies the person who is the reference person for a family in statistics relating to families in households. He/she is identified by criteria based on the family make up.

In a lone parent family it is taken to be the lone parent.
