Relationship within household

Definition: This variable is based on the relationship question which asks the first 5 (6 in Northern Ireland) people in the household to provide information on their relationship with all previously numbered members in the household. Persons 6 (Person 7 in Northern Ireland) and over are asked to identify their relationships with Persons 1 and the previous two people only.

Registration status

Definition: This variable describes whether or not the establishment is registered and who with.

The question is only asked for the following types of establishment:

  • General hospital
  • Psychiatric hospital/home
  • Other hospital
  • Nursing home
  • Residential care home
  • Children's home (including secure units)
  • Other medical and care home

Transport to place of work or study of people in a household

Type: Derived variable

Definition: This variable provides a count of the number of people working or studying in a household with the method of travel used for the longest part, by distance, of their usual journey to work or place of study.

Data zones are the core geography for dissemination of results from Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics (SNS). The data zone geography covers the whole of Scotland and nest within local authority boundaries (as they were in 2011).

Datazones are the core geography for dissemination of results from Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics (SNS). The data zone geography covers the whole of Scotland and nests within local authority boundaries (as they were in 2001).

Datazones are groups of 2001 Census output areas which have populations of between 500 and 1,000 household residents.

Reason for Placeholder

Definition: A placeholder form was completed during the field operation for each valid household or communal establishment that did not return a census questionnaire. The reasons for placeholder form completion include: non-residential property;  refusal of resident to complete a questionnaire; an absent

Variable name: Student Accommodation

Mnemonic reference (code): STAPUK11

Type: Derived variable

Definition: Student term-time accommodation for all students (i.e. schoolchildren and students aged 4 and over in full-time education) living in households and communal establishments. For students in households the classification is derived by looking at the other members of the household, their student status and their generation in family.
